The Psychology of Pregnancy & Early Parenthood. Understanding the Transition.

The perinatal and postnatal period is a time of profound psychological and emotional change. This class offers guidance and support for expectant and new mothers as they navigate this unique developmental phase — a period that reshapes how a woman relates to herself, her partner, and the world around her.

Topics include:

  • understanding perinatal anxiety and ambivalence,
  • exploring pregnancy as a stage of growth and reorganization, and
  • acknowledging the experiences of loss and transformation as the body and identity shift.

We also discuss the father’s essential role in supporting the mother’s emotional balance, the infant’s early developmental needs, and the concepts of the good enough and containing mother.

The goal is to help mothers foster their baby’s emotional development and emerging sense of self from the very beginning. Learning to enjoy pregnancy, tolerate intense emotions, and adapt to the many changes that come with early parenthood lays the foundation for secure attachment and healthy family relationships.
